Regular pruning gives trees access to sunlight and airflow. It increases production and makes trees easy to net and harvest from.

Why prune fruit trees?
Fruit trees growing in gardens and orchards are managed to be strong, healthy trees that produce fruits and nuts efficiently. There are three main reasons to prune fruit trees and often we achieve all three at once.
-
To control the growth and shape of the tree.
-
To increase production of fruit.
-
To minimize disease by improving air flow and sunlight.
Summer and winter pruning
Pruning normally occurs either in summer or winter. We can make an assessment about the best time for your trees, depending on their growth stage and your goals.
-
Winter pruning and summer pruning cause different responses in the plant.
-
Winter pruning is performed when the tree is dormant and causes lots of new growth in spring when the tree shoots.
-
Summer pruning helps to contain growth as the tree doesn’t have as strong a response the following spring.
